The Rev. Dr. George F. Dole Celebration 3 Miler

Fryeburg native, George Dole wondered if the race at the Iffley Road track would be cancelled. High winds threatened to cancel out a moment that has become a part of history.

On May 6, 1954 George took the pole position at 6:00 p.m. in Oxford, England and exactly 3 minutes and 59.4 seconds later, Roger Bannister accomplished his goal of becoming the first person to break the 4 minute mile. A mere 26 seconds later George came in fifth that day.

Running has been an important part of George's life virtually from wire-to-wire.

Each August since 2014 his friends at the Fryeburg New Church Assembly celebrate his passion and achievements by hosting a 3 mile race in his honor on Fryeburg's Rail Trail.

Please join us! It's easy: Just sign up online when registration is open and see you in August!

Proceeds of the race will help to support the camp, the Fryeburg New Church and the Mountain Division Rail Trail.
