Remembering George Dole

The Dole 3 Miler Race Committee is deeply saddened to share that our inspiration, mentor, race namesake, and friend
Rev. Dr. George F. Dole ran full speed through the tape at the finish line of life on June 29, 2021.

We will share details of his family’s plans for a memorial service as soon as we are able.

In the meantime, we encourage you to celebrate George’s life and participate in the 8th Annual Dole 3 Miler which will be run as planned on Saturday, August 14th, in his honor.

Our hearts go out to George’s family as they grieve for a man who’s life was the embodiment of love, wisdom, and charity.

Remembering Roger Bannister

Sir Roger Bannister, famous as the first human to run a mile in under 4 minutes on May 6, 1954, passed away on March 3, 2018.

Rev. Dr. George Dole, Fryeburg, Maine native and namesake of the Dole 3 Miler, ran in that historic race. George was interviewed after Bannister's passing by the Portland Press Herald. Enjoy the resulting article here.

Remembrances of Sir Roger Bannister from Lord Sebastian Coe and Steve Cram, two more recent British middle distance greats, can be enjoyed here.

And, finally, this wonderful piece from the London Times on March 11, 2018 — George Dole: Then the last surviving competitor of the ‘most famous footrace in history’

Rev. Dr. George F. Dole, #15, being led by Sir Roger Bannister, #41, in the world's first 4-minute mile, the most famous footrace in history.

The Fourth Annual Dole 3 Miler took place Saturday, August 5, 2017

The Dole 3 Miler is a new tradition—a three-mile road race in early August in Fryeburg, Maine—a celebration of the life and loves of Fryeburg native, Rev. Dr. George F. Dole. George was one of six runners in perhaps the most famous road race in history, Roger Bannister's Four Minute Mile which took place in Oxford, England on May 6, 1954.

The Fifth Annual Dole 3 Miler will take place Saturday, August 11, 2018!
